GAITAN JOINS ATLETICO

Argentina midfielder Nicolas Gaitan has joined Atletico Madrid from Benfica in a deal reportedly worth 25m euros.

"Atletico Madrid and Benfica have reached an agreement for the transfer of Nicolas Gaitan to his new team," said a statement from Atletico.

Gaitan, 28, is currently taking part in the Copa America in the United States.

Chinese in £700m bid to buy Liverpool

An investment group supported by the Chinese government is attempting to purchase Liverpool for £700million

An investment group supported by the Chinese government is attempting to purchase Liverpool for £700million.

It has emerged that Liverpool's owners Fenway Sports Group have been aware of the proposal from SinoFortone since March.

But it is believed that Fenway, who are led by John W Henry, are reluctant to sell Liverpool at this moment and have been unreceptive to the approach.

While the Premier League's new television rights deal potentially increases the value of all English top flight clubs to unprecedented levels, there is a confidence within FSG that Jürgen Klopp will lead Liverpool into a new era of sporting prosperity.

SinoFortone are also thought to open to the idea of part-investment in Liverpool, offering FSG a medium to long-term exit strategy. This might appeal more to key yet ageing figureheads like Henry and chairman Tom Werner, who will both turn 67 at their next birthdays.

Liverpool is thought to be an attractive proposition to SinoFortone, not least because of the club's history and reasonable current standing, but also because the city is home to Europe's oldest Chinese community.

In April, work on the £200m New Chinatown project began less than a mile away from Liverpool's city centre. The development will include 850 new houses, 150,000 sq. ft. of commercial and retail space, and a new hotel.

Though SinoFortone are not behind this project, its plans were presented to Chinese President Xi's delegation during his visit to Manchester last October.

Werder Bremen want Chelsea's Papy Djilobodji on permanent deal

Werder Bremen have confirmed they are looking into the possibility of signing on-loan defender Papy Djilobodji on a permanent basis from Chelsea.

Djilobodji has become a popular figure at Weserstadion, making 16 appearances in all competitions for Werder and scoring the 88th-minute winner that secured the club's Bundesliga survival against Eintracht Frankfurt on the final day of last season.

Having sanctioned the sale of defender Jannik Vestergaard to Borussia Monchengladbach in a deal reported to be worth in the region of £9 million, Werder sporting director Frank Baumann told kicker that his club plan to "reinvest major parts" of the transfer fee in the squad, and confirmed that Djilobodji is a target.

"He's still on our map, and we are looking into it," Baumann said of Djilobodji. "But there is nothing concrete yet."

Djilobodji moved to Stamford Bridge in a £2.7m deal on transfer deadline day last September  after Chelsea called a halt to their failed pursuit of Everton defender John Stones, with manager Jose Mourinho later admitting that he had agreed to the transfer despite never having seen the 27-year-old play.

Mourinho gave Djilobodji just one minute of first-team action prior to his sacking in December, as a late substitute in Chelsea's 4-1 League Cup win over Walsall in September, and left the Senegal international out of his 25-man squad for the Champions League group stage.

Djilobodji was then loaned to Werder in January when it became clear that he was not part of interim manager Guus Hiddink's plans, with USA youngster Matt Miazga taking his place in Chelsea's Premier League squad.

Skrtel set for £5.5m Fenerbache switch

Martin Skrtel's Liverpool FC career looks to be over with the Reds ready to accept a £5.5m bid for the player from Fenerbache.

Skrtel, who captained Slovakia to a 2-1 victory over Russia in Euro 2016 on Wednesday, is surplus to requirements after eight years of loyal service at Anfield.

The 31-year-old centre-back dropped down the pecking order following the appointment of Jurgen Klopp last season and is keen to take on a new challenge in order to secure regular first-team football.

With new signing Joel Matip arriving from Schalke and the threat of a long ban having been lifted from the shoulders of Mamadou Sakho, Skrtel’s opportunities would have been heavily limited next term.

Skrtel’s agent revealed on Tuesday that the player was considering offers from Fenerbahce and Wolfsburg, as well as a potentially lucrative move to China.

However, Fenerbahce, who were also keen on signing Skrtel last summer, are the clear front-runners with an agreement now in place between the two clubs. Liverpool did business with the Turks last summer when they allowed Lazar Markovic to join them on a season-long loan.

The deal is set to be completed after Skrtel’s duties at Euro 2016 are complete.

Real Madrid winger Denis Cheryshev returns to Villarreal on a permanent deal

Villarreal have acquired Real Madrid winger Denis Cheryshev on a permanent transfer with the Russian international signing a five-year deal with the La Liga club.
Cheryshev returns to Villarreal, the club he played on loan in the 2014-15 campaign when he scored seven goals in 40 appearances in all competitions.

'Cheryshev stands out for his great technical capacity, ability speed...which makes him a crucial player,' Villarreal said in a statement.

Both clubs confirmed the deal but did not reveal the transfer fee which has been reported by Marca as being in the region of 10 million euros.
'Real Madrid and Villarreal have reached an agreement over the transfer of the player, Denis Cheryshev,' a statement from Real Madrid read.

'The club wishes to thank the player for his dedication and professionalism during these years and wishes him the very best in this new chapter of his career.'

JUVE IN FOR WITSEL

Belgium international Axel Witsel is a transfer target for Juventus, according to Tuttosport.

The 27-year-old is contracted to Zenit St Petersburg until 2017 but has confirmed he is keen to leave the club this summer.

The report suggests Witsel is also attracting the interest of Stoke and another Serie A club in Roma.

'MKHITARYAN NOT FOR SALE'

Borussia Dortmund have told Manchester United they will not sell Henrikh Mkhitaryan this summer.

United enquired about the availability of the Armenia international, a key playmaker within the Dortmund team. However, they were told he is not for sale.

United manager Jose Mourinho is known to have a good relationship with the Borussia Dortmund CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke, and was pictured watching Dortmund's game against Hertha Berlin with him in February.

Sources said Mourinho asked Watzke about the possibility of signing Mkhitaryan this summer, but was told they are not prepared to let him go.

GOTZE TO ARSENAL?

Arsenal are lining up a £27m bid for Bayern Munich's Mario Gotze, according to The Sun.

The report suggests the Gunners have been forced to switch targets after it emerged Borussia Dortmund star  Henrikh Mkhitaryan is keen on a move to Manchester United.

And Wenger is now ready to move for Germany international Gotze, who is also reportedly being tracked by Liverpool and his former club Borussia Dortmund.

PEDRO HOLDS BARCA TALKS

Chelsea forward Pedro says he has held initial talks about a return to Barcelona after just a single season at Stamford Bridge.

The 28-year-old, who is currently on international duty with Spain at Euro 2016, was signed for £22m from Barca last summer, but struggled to make an impact during his debut season in the Premier League.

Italy boss Antonio Conte will become Chelsea head coach following the conclusion of Euro 2016 and his first job could be to convince Pedro to remain at the club.

"Hopefully (I can return to Barcelona) but I know it's hard," Pedro told beIN Sports. "I have already spoken about it with the president (Josep Maria Bartomeu) when we (Barcelona) were in the (Cup) final (when Barcelona beat Sevilla 2-0 last month) and spoke to all the people who want me there.

"It's complicated, but I've always said that I would like to retire at Barcelona. However, I know it's difficult because the years go by and the club has the best players in the world, it is a very demanding club and to return is complicated. But I do not rule it out either."

Brazil sack coach Dunga after Copa America exit

Brazil sacked national coach Dunga on Tuesday after their humiliating group-stage elimination from the Copa America Centenario.
The Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) said in a statement it decided to fire Dunga and “dissolve the Brazilian national team’s coaching staff” following their latest debacle.
The news came after CBF officials met with Carlos Caetano Bledorn, alias Dunga, earlier on Tuesday.

The exit from the Copa America centennial edition in the United States was the latest blow to demoralized, recession-hit Brazil.
The country was still recovering from the national team’s 7-1 World Cup semi-final thrashing by Germany on home soil in 2014.

After an opening 0-0 draw with Ecuador was followed by a 7-1 win over Haiti, Brazil needed a draw with Peru on Monday to reach the quarter-finals of the Copa.
Instead they crashed out of the tournament after losing 1-0 to a disputed goal.
Peru’s Raul Ruidiaz appeared to bundle in a cross with his arm to score late in the second half.
It was the first time in three decades that Brazil had exited the tournament at the group stage.

But the side failed to regain their shine during his second term in charge.
They have had a disappointing qualifying campaign so far for the 2018 World Cup in Russia.
They are currently in sixth place in their regional group, which would be too low to qualify.
Brazilian media branded Sunday’s defeat a national disgrace.

Arsenal and Chelsea blow! as Barcelona set to sign Lyon defender Samuel Umtiti

Lyon starlet Samuel Umtiti has snubbed Arsenal and Chelsea in favour of a move to Barcelona, according to reports in France.

The 22-year-old has been tipped as a future star, having already made over 160 senior appearances.

Arsene Wenger’s Gunners and Antonio Conte’s Blues have been scouting the centre-back for a few months and it was rumoured they were ready to make moves this summer.

But, according to LeDauphine.com, Umtiti is on the brink of signing for Barcelona instead.

The Spanish champions are in the need of a new centre-back with Javier Mascherano reportedly on his way out of the Nou Camp.

As a result, Barca have swooped for Umtiti and they are hoping to tie up a £24m deal in the coming days.

Nolito agrees to join Pep Guardiola's Man City after Euro 2016, claim reports in Spain

Manchester City reportedly have a deal in place to land Celta Vigo forward Nolito - and will beat off Barcelona to his signature.

The 29-year-old has been chased by Barcelona for the last year but now Pep Guardiola has apparently persuaded him to join City instead of his former club.

According to Spanish TV station Tele 5, the winger has reached a verbal agreement with Guardiola to join City after Euro 2016 following an impressive season for Celta Vigo.

Nolito scored 12 goals and laid on seven assists in 29 La Liga games last season and started for Vicente Del Bosque's Spain in their Euro 2016 opening win against Czech Republic on Monday.

Reports earlier this summer had claimed that Nolito was hoping to join Barca, where he feels he has unfinished business having made just two appearances during his one-year spell there back in 2010/11.

But Celta are reluctant to sell to Barca and have instead opened talks with City over a potential deal.

Wales players to share £3m if they beat England at Euro 2016

The Wales players have the added incentive of taking Euro 2016 bonuses beyond £3 million with victory against England on Thursday after the Football Association of Wales agreed to share all prize money for the tournament three ways.

A third will go to the players and staff, a third is being devoted to their preparation costs and the rest will be put towards further FAW projects to help improve Welsh football.

Every group win at Euro 2016 is worth €1 million on top of the €8 million that Wales received for qualifying for the tournament but victory over England would also guarantee a further €1.5 million for reaching the last 16.

That means that winning tomorrow would take Wales’s total guaranteed pot to €11.5 million, which would then equate to just over £3 million between players and staff.

The total prize money is a significant increase on previously European Championships, with the pot standing at €301 million (£239 million) compared to the €196 million (£155 million) for the previous competition in Poland and the Ukraine.

That is largely due to the growth of the tournament from 16 to 24 nations, although the maximum that could be won by one team has only increased from £18.6 million to £21.4 million despite an extra match.

Wales have already invested heavily in their training camp in Dinard, with the pitches even cut to the same pattern as in the stadiums.

“Wales like every participant will receive eight million euros, that money has effectively been spent on the development of all the facilities, all the charter aircraft, all the hotels, everything we need to do to participate,” said Jonathan Ward, the FAW chief executive.

“Beyond that there are certain win and progression bonuses and of course the further you go through the tournament the more money you get, let's hope we can as far as we can and we bring some money home for the betterment of Welsh football."

England boss Roy Hodgson to keep faith in team that played against Russia

Roy Hodgson will give Harry Kane another chance to kick-start England’s Euro 2016 campaign by naming an unchanged team to face Wales in Lens tomorrow.

The Tottenham Hotspur striker will keep his place up front despite impressive performances from Daniel Sturridge in training because Hodgson has decided to stick with the same personnel and the 4-3-3 system that brought a 1-1 draw against Russia in Marseilles on Saturday, with Wayne Rooney remaining in midfield.

Hodgson had identified the Wales game as a match in which he may use a 4-4-2 diamond on the grounds that Chris Coleman’s side are likely.

Roger Federer, Kei Nishikori and Dominic Thiem are in action at Gerry Weber Open

Roger Federer starts his bid for a fourth straight title at the Gerry Weber Open today, live on Sky Sports.

The Swiss star has dominated the grass court tournament in recent years and begins his pursuit of more silverware with a first round match against Jan-Lennard Struff in Halle.

Federer returned from a back injury at last week's Mercedes Cup, losing to Dominic Thiem in the semi-finals, and is facing a challenging field of competitors, including the exciting Austrian and second seed Kei Nishikori.

Thiem added a fourth title in Stuttgart and will be expected to continue his fine form in an opening match against Joao Sousa from Portugal.

Among the second round matches, Nishikori will face Florian Mayer, while Andreas Seppi takes on Yuichi Sugita following his impressive first round win over David Ferrer.

Elsewhere in the draw, Alexander Zverev shares the court with Benjamin Becker in an all-German contest, while Dustin Brown's battle with Marcos Baghdatis should provide some entertainment.

Boxing stars and celebs to honour Muhammad Ali at special Saturday fight night

Figures from across the world of Boxing and beyond will pay tribute to Muhammad Ali at a huge event on Saturday.

Top local prospects will be joined by stars from the world of entertainment at a New York themed fight night.

Topping the bill is Hattersley hitman Marcus Morrison with Commonwealth Games Gold medallist Callum Johnson also on the card as ‘Madison Square Garden comes to Manchester.’

They will be joined in the packed arena by big names from the sport including current world champion Anthony Crolla, Ricky Hatton, Joe Gallagher and brothers Liam, Paul, Stephen and Callum Smith.

And the organisers have now announced plans to pay homage to Ali, who died earlier this month aged 74.

A video montage will be played as spectators take to their seats at Event City next to the Trafford Centre.

That will be accompanied by a live performance tribute and other nods to the former world heavyweight champion.

One of Ali’s most famous bouts, ‘The Fight of the Century’ against Joe Frazier in 1971, took place at the Manhattan arena which has inspired the event.

And promoter James Lindemann said it was only fitting that it included a tribute to the great man.

James, 41, from Hale said: “He’s an absolute icon who meant so much to so many people

“Madison Square was the venue for one of his most famous fights, the first of his fights against Joe Frazier.

There will be a VIP party, attended by celebrities from the world of entertainment and TV following the event.

IAAF to vote on Russian athletes ahead of Rio

Scandal-hit Russia will discover on Friday if it has done enough to get back into world track and field's governing body, the IAAF, in time for its athletes to compete at the Rio Olympics.

IAAF Council: Who votes?

The 27-member IAAF Council, headed by president Sebastian Coe, meets in Vienna to decide whether to readmit Russia.

The IAAF provisionally suspended the All-Russian Athletic Federation (ARAF) in November over a bombshell report by a World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) independent commission that said there was state-sponsored doping and mass corruption in Russian athletics.

Long-time ARAF president Valentin Balakhnichev was banned for life in January by the IAAF ethics commission for allegedly taking bribes to cover up doping by Russian athletes.

Russian Sports Minister Vitaly Mutko has wavered between contrite apology and brash counter-attack as Moscow lobbies heavily for its re-inclusion in time for the Rio Games.

In its bid to overturn the ban, Russia has announced a raft of reforms including the introduction of compulsory anti-doping classes in schools to reform attitudes toward the use of performance-enhancing drugs.

Russia's anti-doping agency RUSADA will develop a special curriculum, based on WADA guidelines, for the 3 000 sports schools where the country's elite athletes train.

International experts have been appointed to assist with reforms and a minimum of three additional "independent, externally administered anti-doping controls" for athletes hoping to compete in Rio.

The IAAF also demanded that ARAF sever ties with staff with any past involvement in doping, and abide by all WADA regulations.

WADA director-general David Howman delivered a withering response on Monday, saying the progress made by Russia was simply not enough to merit its reinstatement within the IAAF.

Commentators have suggested that the International Olympic Committee (IOC), which is to meet on June 21 on eligibility issues, could offer an olive branch to Russia by opening up participation in Rio for certain doping-vetted Russian athletes.

"It's a plausible option," French athletics federation president and IAAF Council member Bernard Amsalem told AFP.

"But what are the guarantees that we can have on the Russians?...

"It's a state system and it's difficult to make sense of things. It's also a credibility issue for the IAAF. Our image is tarnished and the only way to rectify this is to be hard."

Mutko added last month that Russia would not include athletes who in the past had committed "gross violations of anti-doping rules" on its Olympic team.

But Russia faces an uphill battle for its reinstatement and recent allegations by the former head of Russia's anti-doping laboratory, Grigory Rodchenkov, now threaten to derail the country's efforts to compete in Rio.

Rodchenkov, who has fled to the United States, described an organised doping campaign including at least 15 medallists during the 2014 Sochi Games, with the close involvement of the sports ministry and the FSB security service - allegations Mutko was quick to dismiss as "absurd".

The Russian athletics doping scandal was brought to light by whistleblowers, including runner Yulia Stepanova and her husband Vitaly Stepanov, a former RUSADA employee, who prompted WADA to investigate their shocking allegations about the prevalence of doping in Russian athletics.

Stepanova, who was slapped with a two-year suspension in 2013 for doping, and her husband were branded traitors, and like Rodchenkov, now live in exile.

Dmitry Shlyakhtin, a little-known regional official who was elected to head ARAF in January, told AFP that Rodchenkov's allegations came out of "fantasy movies or television series".

"All these things add negativity in terms of the final decision," Shlyakhtin said.

French federation head Amsalem added: "When I talk to Council members, they agree with me (on being tough).

"But there's a lot of pressure, political, all sorts, direct or indirect in each of our countries which means that some (members) will hesitate."

Russia blames EURO 2016 fan violence on provocation

Russian sports minister Vitaly Mutko says he cannot rule out the country's soccer fans being involved in more violence at Euro 2016 tournament in France because they are constantly being provoked, the TASS news agency is reporting.

Russia, whose fans fought pitched battles in Marseille at the weekend with their English counterparts, are due to play Slovakia later on Wednesday in Lille where English and Welsh fans have gathered ahead of their two teams' game on Thursday.

"I do not have any certainty that disorder involving Russian fans will not be repeated," TASS quoted Mutko as saying. "Our fans are constantly being provoked. And whatever happens, it is immediately said that the Russians are guilty."

Russian state TV on Wednesday broadcast what it said was footage of an English fan stamping on a Russian flag in Lille, part of what Russian officials said had been a pattern of offensive provocations towards Russian supporters.

European governing body UEFA has said Russia will be thrown out of the tournament if there is a repeat of the violence by Russian fans which marred the end of last Saturday's match against England.

"There are now 15-20,000 Russians in different towns (in France)," Mutko was cited as saying. "Most of them want to watch good football."

Russian foreign minister Sergei Lavrov told parliament on Wednesday it was impossible to ignore what he said were outrageous provocations by English football fans at Euro16, the RIA agency reported.

"We cannot close our eyes to the absolutely provocative actions by supporters from other countries," Lavrov was quoted as telling parliament.

"You have probably seen the outrageous images on TV when the Russian flag is getting stamped on and when insults are being screamed about the Russian (political) leadership and about leading Russian sports people."

Talking about violence involving Russian fans, President Vladimir Putin's spokesman Dmitry Peskov said separately the Kremlin hoped there would be no further "excesses" and that any investigations into violence would be even-handed.

Daniele De Rossi 'a little bit scared' of Zlatan Ibrahimovic but Italy midfielder confident of keeping the Sweden 'legend' quiet in Euro 2016 Group E clash

Italy are wary of the threat Sweden captain Zlatan Ibrahimovic poses but they can win Friday's Euro 2016 match in the same way they defeated Belgium, midfielder Daniele De Rossi has said.
The 34-year-old Ibrahimovic, who has scored 62 goals for Sweden, failed to make an impact in his team's 1-1 draw with Ireland.
De Rossi compared the former Paris St Germain striker to Dutch great Marco van Basten.

'Maybe they have less talent than Belgium so they will probably wait in their half and try to play counterattack with long balls,' De Rossi told reporters in France.
'Ibrahimovic is the best forward since the time of Van Basten, except for Ronaldo, but they are different players.
'We are a little bit scared of his power and his talent but we can beat them the same way that we can beat Belgium - with organisation and by working hard on the training pitch.'
