Werder Bremen have confirmed they are looking into the possibility of signing on-loan defender Papy Djilobodji on a permanent basis from Chelsea.
Djilobodji has become a popular figure at Weserstadion, making 16 appearances in all competitions for Werder and scoring the 88th-minute winner that secured the club's Bundesliga survival against Eintracht Frankfurt on the final day of last season.
Having sanctioned the sale of defender Jannik Vestergaard to Borussia Monchengladbach in a deal reported to be worth in the region of £9 million, Werder sporting director Frank Baumann told kicker that his club plan to "reinvest major parts" of the transfer fee in the squad, and confirmed that Djilobodji is a target.
"He's still on our map, and we are looking into it," Baumann said of Djilobodji. "But there is nothing concrete yet."
Djilobodji moved to Stamford Bridge in a £2.7m deal on transfer deadline day last September after Chelsea called a halt to their failed pursuit of Everton defender John Stones, with manager Jose Mourinho later admitting that he had agreed to the transfer despite never having seen the 27-year-old play.
Mourinho gave Djilobodji just one minute of first-team action prior to his sacking in December, as a late substitute in Chelsea's 4-1 League Cup win over Walsall in September, and left the Senegal international out of his 25-man squad for the Champions League group stage.
Djilobodji was then loaned to Werder in January when it became clear that he was not part of interim manager Guus Hiddink's plans, with USA youngster Matt Miazga taking his place in Chelsea's Premier League squad.
